Science Project
Energy-Efficient Home
Due Monday, Dec 5th
First Check: Nov 28th

Design and construct an energy-efficient home that uses renewable energy as much as possible.
Please follow the guidelines listed below:
  • Work could be individual or in pairs. So, you can work alone or with one other student in grade 5.
  • Work on the design and construction will be done at home not in school. Time at school could be used to ask questions or discuss ideas and suggestions.
  • Find information you need in your textbook, other books, online, ask parents, etc.
  • Use any kind of materials to make your home, but make sure it is of moderate size and that you can easily carry it to school. The only materials not allowed are glass and sharp dangerous parts.
  • You don’t have to use the real materials used in building homes: for example, use clear plastic bag for windows instead of glass, use cardboard for walls, construction paper for solar panels, etc.
  • Label the parts that are helping your home be energy efficient: example, “Triple-paned windows that trap the heat inside”, “Solar Panels to provide electricity”, “Rubber strip around the front door to prevent the cold air from coming in”, etc.
  • Prepare an oral presentation 3-4 minutes discussing your home: how your design helps to conserve energy, materials used, challenges you faced and how you could improve it in the future.
  • First check is on Monday,  November 28th, and it will be marked. For the “First Check”, you should show me that you have started working on your project by providing one of the following:

- a colored sketch/drawing of your home on your Science Journal
- a short description of the features in your home on your Journal
- a list of the materials needed for your home on your Journal
- email me a picture of yourself working on your project.

Garbage-Free Thursdays Challenge

As salasm alaikum.

Dear Abraar School families,

Every Thursday in November will be Garbage-Free lunch bag challenge day.

Please help us reduce waste by packing garbage free lunch bags.  Instead of using ziploc bags and plastic cutlery, wrap etc.  please use reusable containers and cutlery, this will help us do our part as a school to make our earth a little bit cleaner inshallah. This ties into our November character theme of CLEANLINESS.

Jazakum Allahu Khairan for your cooperation, and feel free to continue this great habit even after November ends.

Sincerely,
The SK Team

Message from Abraar Administration

Asalamu alaikum.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Today your child will be bringing home their CTBS results. The test was conducted mid October. Please read the cover letter and attached document that explains the CTBS and the results.

Also note that we conducted the Math and Language Arts assessments only (Science, Reference Mat'l, Maps and diagrams were not assessed so the area for the results is blank). If any other area remained blank it would be due to a lack of evidence(not enough questions answered by student).

Students scoring 6 months below their expected Grade Equivalent score will be requested to meet with the teacher to discuss academic performance and plans for intervention. [For example a grade 5 student scoring G.E : 4.2 indicates that the student is at 4 years and 2 months of instruction as opposed to 5.0 -5 years and 0 months of instruction]

Expected G.E Scores are:

Gr. 3 : 3.0 [3 years 0 months of instruction] or higher
Gr. 5: 5.0 [5 years and 0 months of instruction] or higher
Gr. 6: 6.0 [6 years and 0 months of instruction] or higher

Please feel free to contact the homeroom teacher or myself with any further questions.

Student Contests

Assalamu Alaikum Dear Parents,

The Grade 5 students will once again be participating in the annual Polar Expressions Writing contest for students across Canada.  The students will be writing a short story that must not exceed 450 words.  The story should be original and not use any fan fiction or real names.  It must also be Islamically appropriate, as some of the stories will be published and our students will be representing Abraar School.  Students are asked to submit their typed short stories on Tuesday, November 15.  In addition, they can submit a poem (32 lines or less) by Tuesday, November 1 (optional).  I look forward to reading the students' creative submissions!

Thanks for your ongoing cooperation,
Tr. Salma

Message from Islamic Studies Coordinator

As-salamu Alaikum Dear Abraar Parents,

This is a friendly reminder about our current Food Drive for the Sadaqa Food Bank. We have set up collection bins by our school gym but we haven't received enough items until now. We encourage you to participate in this great cause for the the following reasons:

1) Removing grief and hardship of some families who are in dire need to feed their children. It is narrated that Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, said: Whoever removes a worldly grief from a believer, Allah will remove from him one of the griefs of the Day of Resurrection.
2) It is a great way to help our students practice kindness, the character of this month!
3) It is also a great way to help students put their du'aa of the month into practice. Our monthly du'aa is:

اللَّهم إني أسألك فعل الخيرات، وَتَرْكَ الْمُنْكَرَاتِ، وَحُبَّ الْمَسَاكِينِ
“O Allah, I ask You to help me do good deeds, abandon bad deeds, and love the weak and the poor"

Message from the Library

Dear Parents,
Asalamu Alaikum
Where has time gone, SubhanAllah! It seems like yesterday when everyone was getting ready to go back to school. The month of June is just around the corner and with it is the long awaited summer vacation. It is a well-known fact that during summer, the dreaded "Summer Slide" sets in. However, the following ten steps can help prevent the summer slide
 in your child

1. Take a book. The best way to get your kids reading is to have books available, so take them with you, whether it's in the car, at the beach or waiting at the doctor's office.
2. Summer recharge. Plan ahead for a fun reading-related trip midway through the summer to reignite the love of books and reward kids for reading. It doesn't have to be anything fancy; the trip could simply be camping like a character in a favorite book.
3. Explore hobbies. Reading is extra fun when the subject matter involves your favorite things. Look for books that match your kids' personal interests, such as dinosaurs or gymnastics.
4. Magazine madness. Plenty of popular kids magazines can be delivered to your home for an exciting surprise in the mailbox that makes an excellent reason to flip it open and start reading.
5. Road trip reading. A long car ride is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to enjoy an audiobook together. You can discuss the story over lunch breaks and fuel stops to engage even further with the book.
6. Pen pals. Work with other parents to set up pen pals for the summer and have kids write letters back and forth to practice their reading and writing skills.
7. Act it out. Encourage kids to gather some neighborhood friends and create a play based on a favorite book. This helps kids understand the characters and story lines by bringing them to life.
8. Take direction. Ask kids to read the directions for a classic summer project, like setting up a tent or making a snack for a picnic. Whether they are directing you or doing it themselves, reading and understanding directions builds important skills.
9. Head to the library. Most libraries offer fun and interactive summer reading programs for kids that include incentives, activities and structure to help get kids excited about reading all summer long.
10. Tap into tech time. If you've committed to limiting screen time for the summer, consider a compromise that lets kids use devices for productive activities, such as reading e-books.

11. I will add an eleventh step. Scholastic Book Fair! Let’s put an end to the
summer slide. For more information, please click on the Scholastic Book Fair link.

Sincerely,

Nancy-Ann Brethour
