Terry Fox

Dear Parents,
Assalamu Alaikum

Last Wednesday, the students at Abraar Elementary School participated in the Terry Fox National School Run. I must say that it was a success, MashaAllah! Everyone from grade one to grade six participated either through walking or running. It was heartwarming to see the students participate in such large numbers. In addition, I want to share something incredibly sweet with all of you. The JKs and SKs were not able to run, so they decided to do something to help out. The teachers started "A Toonie for Terry" where each child brings two dollars to help in Terry's cause. I was overjoyed to see the amount of toonies raised.

Pledges are starting to come in, MashaAllah! Please note that all pledges need to be returned to school by October 7, 2014, inshaAllah.

I would like to give a big heartfelt thank you to everyone for their participation and generous donations. Jazakum Allahu Kharain.
Have a wonderful day, inshallah.
Sincerely,

Nancy-Ann Brethour

Salamun alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

A short note to welcome you all to the month of Dhul Hijjah! May Allah increase the blessings for us and our families in these first 10 Days. Ameen.

Additionally, well done to the students also for completing the Terry Fox run today and for the money raised in support of cancer research.

ISLAMIC:
The students started working on a display to share with the school next week at the Hajj mini museum. The 5B class will be sharing information about Udhiyah (the sacrifice) with the students.

REMINDER: the students should watch the YouTube link http://youtu.be/i7enIZ80oPU?list=PLFB980212C5BF3107, and complete a paragraph describing something they learned by Friday.

LANGUAGE:
The students have been starting a unit on poetry. So far we have looked at 4 different types of poems, and different poetic language featured in different styles of poetry. As we work we will be building up a collection of poems. Each student will choose their best work to submit as a part of the Polar Expressions Poetry Competition in November.

NOTE: we will be working on short story submissions for entry in the contest's Spring competition later on in the year.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
The students will be continuing their studies of Native culture and early-settlers of Canada. So far we have touched on the first French settlements in Canada, and the relationships with French traders with different Native communities in Canada/USA .

Thank you as always for your support.

Letter from Tr. Hadia (Quran)

Sept. 19th, 2014.

Dear Parents,

Assalamo Allikum.

My name is Hadia Arabi Katbi. I am your child’s Quran teacher. In this

welcoming letter, I ask Allah Almighty to make this school year a successful one, and

to help us make the Quran reach our children’s tongues and hearts. My utmost goal in

my classroom is to make your child learn how to read the Quran properly Inshallah.

Also, your child will be memorizing some Suras of the Quran.

I will keep you informed of your child’s progress in memorization and

learning through the student agenda which will be the main communication line

between me and the parents. On a weekly basis, you will find in the agenda the

ayas we plan to study and memorize and when the ayas are due for testing. Please

do check the agenda at least once a week to check on your child progress as I will

write notes and comments in case your child is not progressing.

Inshallah, with your help, support and feedback, you will notice a big difference

in your child’s Quran reciting. Please feel free to contact me through the school

number or my email.

September Scholastic Book Orders

salamun alaykum,

***IMPORTANT NOTE***
I will only accept orders by cheque (no cash please)

Literacy and reading are skills that greatly influences the benefits we receive from our education. It opens our minds to new ideas and worlds we can't see in our daily life as children. Please do not underestimate the change you can cause in your child's life by encouraging them to read. I encourage you as parents to encourage your child to read.

If you are interested in ordering books from Scholastic this year, I will be making the flyers and printable order forms available via the blog. Feel free to find books from other sources as well (especially if you have already promoted and encouraged reading at home).

You may email me to have a printed copy of the pdf sent home with your child in shaa Allah.

Flyers and order forms can be found here:
